DESIGN Critical essay

Aims and objective
To develop research and critical analysis skills by identifying and responding to main arguments in various sources
To present a clear position in response to a question within the word count
To practise incorporating arguments from other sources using direct and indirect (paraphrasing) quotation
To produce a piece of writing which follows a traditional critical essay structure of introduction, body, and conclusion
Task
Present a written argument in response to the following statement:


“The differences between art and design lie not so much in how they look as in what they do” Michael Brady

How far do you agree with this statement?


Word length
FdA & BA - 500 – 700.
Grad Dip & MA – 700 – 1,000.

Deadline
Monday 6th September 2010 1.00pm. Please hand your assessment to your class tutor. The Pre-sessional Academic English Programme office staff will collect the assessments from your class room.
We will NOT accept late assessments. Any assessment submitted after 1.00pm will automatically fail.

Format
Double line spacing.
Arial or Times New Roman font between 10 and 12 point
Write the word count on the assessment.

Source material
UG students (BA, FdA) must use at least one text from the Pre-sessional Academic English Programme reader. Any other sources must be approved by your tutor and a copy must be attached to your critical essay.
PG students (MA, Grad Dip, Grad Cert) must use at least four sources in their essay. One of these must be from the Pre-sessional Academic English Programme reader. Any other sources must be approved by your tutor and a copy must be attached to your critical essay.

You will be assessed according to the Pre-sessional Academic English Programme Critical essay marking criteria
